YEAR Function - SQL


Overview


The YEAR function in SQL extracts the year part from a date. It is useful for retrieving the year component of a date.

Example:

SELECT YEAR('2022-09-14')

Syntax:

SELECT YEAR(date)

date is the date from which you want to extract the year.

Example: Hard-coded value


In this example, we are returning the year for the date ‘2022-09-14,’ the final output is 2022.


Example: Query without the WHERE Statement


In this example, we are returning the year for all of the rows in the birthday column.


Example: Query with the WHERE Statement


In this example, we are returning the year for the rows in the birthday column where the first_name column equals ‘Kelly.’
